The substance abuse treatment industry has historically faced the challenge of collecting outcomes data. Though some treatment providers have conducted their own research and outcomes studies with participants in their programs, there has not been an industry wide, standardized tool to measure outcomes.
The National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP) worked to pilot an outcomes collection toolkit across 8 residential treatment programs in the United States to help fill the need for a standardized tool and process. The toolkit includes surveys, forms, best practices, and outcomes collection guidelines to help treatment facilities – regardless of size, budget, geographical area or population served – successfully collect outcomes for research or internal purposes.
The treatment providers included in the NAATP pilot study utilized in-person interviews and follow-up phone calls to collect their outcomes data. One-third of evaluation participants in the NAATP pilot completed the 12-month follow-up survey. The cost and manpower needed to collect outcomes data can often be a barrier for facilities.
